BREAKING OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE: WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

The greatest periods of growth and opportunity in my life have been when I or external forces pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

Four years ago I was almost finished with an intense 15-month leadership course that involved lots of inspirational readings and networking with self-motivated peers who were excelling in their fields.  These factors set the  equation that gave me the courage to take a leap towards a new job in the pharmacy profession.  A job that was another step closer to what my long-term goals and interests were.  Though I really liked my current job, the hours weren't ideal and I was at a very comfortable place where my job wasn't really a challenge anymore.  Could I have done it for twenty more years?  Absolutely, but a big part of job satisfaction and my self satisfaction is personal and professional growth.

My challenge to you is to push out of your comfort zone.  Scientists say that there is an "optimal anxiety" point which is where your productivity and performance reach their peak.  Think of an elite athlete, performer or a politician giving a major speech.  Of course they are nervous, but they channel that energy to put on a spectacular performance.

First, you need to know where you are going - whether it be a fitness/health, relationship, career related etc....  Once you have the vision, take things to the next level.  Go big or go home.  Commit to change. Work it into your daily routine.  Nothing will change if you don't change.

And sometimes, something else will push you out of your comfort zone.  You may be asked to take on an extra responsibility at work, maybe you hit a challenge in your relationship, maybe you have to learn to deal with a difficult person or maybe you have had a health scare and need to get healthy.  Whatever the case, embrace the change and use it to grow and become your best self.
